New sectoral agreement for phlebotomists and decontamination & sterilization technicians

The Ministry of Health and the Malta Union of Midwives & Nurses (MUMN) today signed a new sectoral agreement for the next five years involving two categories of workers; phlebotomists and decontamination & sterilization technicians.

The agreement has ensured, among other things, training for these workers which will lead to both better service to patients and career advancement of these workers, as well as improvements in allowances related to these two categories of workers.

The agreement was signed by Permanent Secretary Joseph Chetcuti and Chief Medical Officer Dr Walter Busuttil on behalf of the Ministry of Health and by Mr Paul Pace and Mr Colin Galea, President and Secretary General on behalf of -MUMN.

Present at the signing were Mater Dei Hospital CEO Celia Falzon, Health Ministry Director Rita Micallef, as well as shop stewards of these two categories of workers.

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne welcomed the agreement and congratulated the workers and all those involved in the agreement. “Congratulations to the MUMN for recognizing that while advancing the interests of its member workers, it has made patient care a priority. That should always be the case. The government remains committed to improving the conditions of health workers as the service is further strengthened. ”
