An extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council meeting of the European Union was convened  on Friday to discuss the latest developments following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, was also invited to exchange views with European foreign ministers.

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo strongly condemned this act of aggression against the sovereignty of Ukraine and its people and called for all cessation of hostilities.

Minister Bartolo also echoed other EU ministers on the need for a strong message of solidarity that should be conveyed to the people of Ukraine in the face of unprovoked aggression. Minister Bartolo added that, “notwithstanding our indignation and condemnation, a door must be left open for dialogue”.

He also stressed the importance that Russia abides by international humanitarian law and allows safe and unhindered humanitarian access and assistance to all persons in need.

The Foreign Affairs Council approved an additional package of restrictive measures that were agreed upon yesterday by the EU leaders during the European Council meeting.
