Reinforcement works on the electricity distribution system continue with an investment of €1.5 million

Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli announces completion of works to reinforce electricity system in Żurrieq

Enemalta employees and its technical teams are carrying out reinforcement works the electricity distribution system in several localities around Malta and Gozo.

After announcing an investment of €1 million in the infrastructure in Baħrija, the Minister for Energy Miriam Dalli visited works in Żurrieq which were made with an investment of €1.5 million.

Works on a new 11KV cable are being done in three different areas in Żurrieq. These works, which are to be finalised in the coming months, will ensure a more stable supply in the area. The area will then be supplied from two distribution centres in Ħal Far and Kirkop. This involves a new 11KV cable and the change of switchgear in two other substations.

Works in Żurrieq also include a new substation in Triq l-Indipendenza with an investment of €250,000. Other main investments which have already started or are to commence in the coming months include a €400,000 investment in a cable and another substation in Bubaqra.

Other works are being carried out in other residential areas and in a zone known as Vincenzo Caruana, where low-voltage cables are being changed. These projects in Żurrieq are being done with a total investment of over €1.5 million.

“The reinforcement works in Żurrieq are just a small part of Enemalta’s programme of reinforcement of the distribution system which is being realized at a fast pace, with works being carried out on the daily including on Sundays and Public Holidays. I take this opportunity to thank Enemalta’s engineers and technical teams and other employees for their work,” stated Minister Dalli.

The Mayor of Żurrieq, Rita Grima, expressed her appreciation for this work. She stated that she is convinced that through this investment for families and businesses, residents of Żurrieq will benefit from a reinforced electricity supply.

Enemalta’s engineers are continuously studying problematic areas due to the fact that in certain zones the infrastructure is not coping with the sudden increase in demand. Enemalta is carrying out several interventions that are not covered by the media, such as the laying of high voltage cables from distribution centres to substations, the laying of low voltage feeders/cables and overhead lines which carry electricity supply from substations to Enemalta clients’ homes and businesses.

In order to ensure a more stable electricity supply, apart from working capital projects on three distribution centres, Enemalta is carrying out an extensive reinforcement plan on the low-voltage network in several localities and areas including in Qrendi, Ħal Mula in Żebbuġ, in four different areas in Mosta, in parts of Żejtun which effect Tas-Salvatur, Tal-Ħniena, Degabriele, Il-Gwiedi and Bugħarbiel in Manikata.

The projects department has commenced several works and has others in store due to start in Triq Monsinjur Azzopardi in Siġġiewi, Qaliet in Marsascala, Vjal ir-Repubblika and Żgħaruna in Għargħur and tal-Mirakli in Iklin.

The list of works which started and others planned is much more extensive. These works, together with other maintenance works sometimes require a planned interruption in electricity supply to safeguard the workers. Such maintenance works are necessary to ensure a stable electricity supply. “We encourage the public to register by sending their ID card number via SMS on 79052492 to receive an SMS alert whenever scheduled maintenance works that may affect electricity supply in their area are being carried out,” explained Enemalta’s chairman, Eng. Jonathan Scerri.
