Holland has announced a Christmas lockdown amid concerns over the Omicron coronavirus variant as countries across Europe have been tightening restrictions as the heavily mutated variant spreads.
Non-essential shops, schools, bars, restaurants and other public venues will be closed until at least mid-January. Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the restrictions were “unavoidable”.
After midnight French time, travellers will need to show a compelling reason for travel between Britain and France, under shock new rules announced yesterday by France to combat the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
All travellers arriving in France from Britain will need to quarantine for seven days, although this can be just two if they provide a negative test after arriving in the country.
These latest restrictions come as the UK recorded the highest number of daily Covid infections since the pandemic began, more than 90,000 for a second day running including 10,000 Omricon cases.
Republic of Ireland and Germany have also announced measures designed to curb the infections.
