Located at the ECOHIVE Complex in Naxxar, a new facility will be maximising the value of bulky waste without taking up any more land.
This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia during a visit at the ECOHIVE Complex in Naxxar together with WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca.
Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia explained how this facility will be built in an innovative way without taking up more land, as it will be built between two landfills.
Minister Farrugia said that this facility will continue improving waste management by moving away from the concept of landfilling. This plant will be part of the €500 million investment already announced – the ECOHIVE Project – which will consist of four new plants.
This facility will be accepting bulky waste from open-topped skips. Once at the facility, these materials will be separated according to the type of waste and processed separately with the aim of increasing the value of the material for export. The processes performed at this facility are aimed at recovering as much material as possible, effectively reducing waste directed to the landfill. This will continue to improve Malta’s recycling rate.
WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca said that around 47,000 tonnes of mixed bulky waste are delivered in open-topped skips per year. With this facility, WasteServ will be separating this waste so that it can be turned into a resource, therefore diverting waste away from the landfill. He encouraged people who make use of these skips to still separate waste at the source, as they will help make the process more efficient.
This facility, with an investment of over €10 million, is expected to start operating in 2023.
