Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne and Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Minister Byron Camilleri inaugurated a new 112 Command Centre at Mater Dei Hospital. This command centre is part of the 112 emergency system in the country and is specialized for emergencies where medical assistance is needed.
“The Emergency Department in our country has about 110 ambulance calls a day, which amounts to about 41,000 calls a year. In fact 70% of calls on 112 will need medical help. This center is equipped with the most advanced software that exists and the system is also connected to Transport Malta and therefore indicates which ambulance is closest (in time) to the scene of the accident. The system also allows doctors in the Emergency Department to be able to see the exact condition of the patient, ”said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He thanked the Ministry of Interior for the work that the two ministries did together on this project, the FMS and all the staff in the Emergency Department for their dedication and commitment.
The Minister of Interior, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri explained that this investment is a testament to how much the government is committed to strengthening the resources of law enforcement. “With an investment of € 3.8 million, the 112 numbering technology system within the Emergency Department will be more efficient in responding to calls made to it,” the minister said.
He listed a number of features that include the new system including the ability of the caller to send a photo as in certain situations this can lead to a more immediate response from emergency services. Minister Camilleri concluded by saying that today the government is investing in the best equipment so that law enforcement workers work with the best tools.
