COVID-19: Austria begins nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people

The Austrian government has ordered a nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people starting at midnight Monday to combat rising coronavirus infections and deaths.

The new measure came into force at midnight after Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said the situation was serious and the job of the government was to protect the people. following an announcement from the country’s chancellor on Sunday.

The lockdown applies to people over the age of 12 who have not received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine. They are forbidden from leaving their homes except for basic activities such as working, grocery shopping, going for a walk — or getting vaccinated.

Around 2 million people are thought to be affected by this measure.
