PM tells Balkans summit, Malta supports EU expansion process

Prime Minister Robert Abela attended the informal meeting of European leaders and the EU-Western Balkans summit on 5 and 6 October in Slovenia, which currently holds the presidency of -EU Council.

The first day’s discussion focused on the role of the European Union at international level against the background of the latest global developments.

Topics on which Prime Minister Robert Abela argued that there should be a coordinated collective effort to strengthen the role that the European Union has at global level.

“I welcome the discussion on the autonomous strategy. I firmly believe that when faced with such situations, we should be in a position to anticipate them rather than be reactive. That is the way we should operate the European Union, and this can only be done if we strengthen our resilience. “

The Prime Minister added that in every decision and action taken, citizens must be kept at the center to achieve their aspirations.

Leaders also had a preliminary discussion on rising energy prices across Europe, before discussing them in more detail at a European Council meeting later this month. In this discussion, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that not every country has the same means and technologies to produce or buy electricity and therefore, one common solution for all should not be considered. He stressed that the aim of the government remains to ensure that the interests of Maltese citizens and businesses are protected.

At the EU summit with the Balkan countries, the Prime Minister reiterated the importance of further cooperation with these countries to ensure greater peace and prosperity.

Dr Abela reiterated the support of the Maltese Government in favor of the EU enlargement process, and for these countries to join as members of the European Union.
