An agreement has been signed whereby Malta will have access to more sustainable agricultural practices
In recent days, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights Anton Refalo visited CIHEAM’s offices in Bari, Italy, as part of the commitment of the ministry to strengthen the relationship of Malta on a Mediterranean level when it comes to the development of agriculture.
CIHAEM, the Mediterranean agri-economic institute, works with a number of Mediterranean countries, including Malta, to promote sustainable agricultural practices. Our country has been working closely with this institute for 30 years, and in recent months, among others, joint work has been done to set up AgriHub. This project today is gathering directly and recurrently very important information through which the Maltese farmer and farmer are being helped to address various challenges such as weather and the impact of pests, among others.
During the visit, Minister Refalo met with a number of officials within CIHAEM as well as with the directors responsible for agriculture for the Puglia region. Together they discussed important issues while consolidating an agreement that will strengthen cooperation on agricultural strategy, food, knowledge of new technologies and the promotion of sustainable practices particularly in the use of natural resources. Through this agreement, the Maltese authorities will have access to information through which they can adopt agricultural practices that have less impact on the environment while making this sector more sustainable and economically viable.
