In three years, 709 roads have been completed as part of the €700 million in 7 years plan. This was announced by the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg while he was visiting the work site in Triq il-Ġermanja in Naxxar.
The number of 709 roads in the last three years means an average of more than 4 new roads being built each week. So far, during 2021, 123 residential and 71 rural roads have been completed in the countryside while works are currently underway on more than 50 residential and 26 other rural roads.
Minister Ian Borg began by thanking the workers of Infrastructure Malta, ranging from professionals to the contractors’ manual workers, for the important work they are doing. Minister Borg reminded how these works are not being carried out in isolation and remarked that it is important to note the major interventions being carried out in strategic places around Malta, with examples such as the Marsa Junction project, inaugurated last April, and currently the Central Link and the Kirkop Tunnels and Airport Intersection project among others, in addition to maritime ones such as Shore to Ship.
During his visit to Triq il-Ġermanja, in the area known as tas-Sagħjtar in Naxxar, he explained how Infrastructure Malta, apart from the asphalt work, is often intervening by also changing many underground systems such as water pipes, drainage pipes, electrical cables and even making storm water systems. Infrastructure Malta has so far completed seven of the 13 roads in this area.
Minister Borg recalled how the Maltese and Gozitan people had voted in favour of unprecedented infrastructural work in 2017 and said that this work is now being witnessed and utilised by everyone.
Present during this visit was the Chief Executive of Infrastructure Malta Fredrick Azzopardi together with the management of the same agency as well as the mayor of the locality of Naxxar, Anne Marie Muscat Fenech Adami.
