Successful end to ‘Water – Be The Change’ campaign in Gozo

Thousands of Gozitan families have received their water conservation kit over the last seven weeks, as part of the national conservation campaign: ‘Water – Be the Change’, which was touring localities in Gozo.

Through this campaign, more than 12,000 Gozitan families had the opportunity to collect the water-saving kits during June and July. Now, the ‘Water – Be the Change’ campaign aims to extend the collaboration with the Ministry of Gozo by including the mobile distribution unit at events organised in Gozo.

This was announced by Ministers Clint Camilleri, Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi during a press conference in Gozo.

The mobile unit spent the past seven weeks in 14 localities around Gozo distributing kits promoting more efficient use of water in homes. Residents received a voucher and a gift pack to be redeemed from the mobile unit.

In comments, Minister Miriam Dalli said that small changes in our day-to-day life lead to considerable changes.

“The water-saving kits distributed throughout Malta and Gozo can lead to a reduction in water consumption of about 40,000 litres per year for a family of four members. By installing these tools and applying efficient water use practices, water consumption will be reduced, which will mean less impact on groundwater,” Minister Miriam Dalli said.

Minister Clint Camilleri praised the work of the campaign. He said that this campaign raised more awareness amongst people about the importance of conserving water. Minister Camilleri thanked both Minister Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi for giving Gozitans the opportunity to benefit from such projects. The Minister for Gozo concluded by saying that Gozo is always ready to welcome more investments that will improve the quality of life of its people.

Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that this campaign is part of an initiative that is being carried out with a total investment of €24.4 million, out of which €21.2 million are European funds.

He explained that the aim of the campaign is to continue to raise awareness about the importance of water, and that is why mobile units were set up in both Malta and Gozo to distribute water-saving kits, in which one can find items to reduce water consumption.

Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi said that, through such initiatives, we will stay in contact with our communities so that together we can preserve our water resources, which are of paramount importance to us.

The campaign is run by the Energy and Water Agency within the Ministry for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development and is co-financed by European funds under a cohesion project.

The campaign will continue with more distribution in Maltese localities.
