Edward Zammit Lewis tells Justice Ministers, “we must protect the vulnerable”

Minister for Justice and Governance Edward Zammit Lewis participated in the Informal Council of Ministers of Justice in Slovenia.

During this meeting, Ministers discussed digital rights at a time of technological advancement, the protection of children in the justice system, and the advancement of artificial intelligence.

Minister Edward Zammit Lewis spoke on the justice and juvenile systems where he explained the development that Malta has made in the Courts through Children’s House, a measure that helps and protects minors as they can give statements to away from the Court building and without the need to confront the aggressor.

Minister Zammit Lewis said it was the duty of every government to protect all those who are vulnerable, “which is why we have an obligation to create measures to protect children.”

Ministers discussed also the artificial intelligence and the work that the European Union is carrying out in terms of regulating this sector. Minister Edward Zammit Lewis spoke of the need for the EU to do so as there is a need for a framework that provides legal certainty and safeguards human rights.

The Minister said that “it is important to start work to regulate artificial intelligence, but it is important to have uniform rules in each Member State, because it is only in this way that we ensure respect for human rights. -man ”.

In the margins of this meeting, Minister Zammit Lewis attended a virtual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during which he explained the unprecedented developments made by Malta with constitutional and institutional reforms that strengthen the a rule of law and justice in our country.
