Talks in Brussels on Libya

In Brussels, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo met bilaterally with the Foreign Affairs Minister of Egypt, Sameh Hassan Shoukry, during which the Ministers discussed a number of bilateral and regional issues. During this meeting, Minister Bartolo highlighted the importance of strengthening Libya’s national unity. He stated that Malta is in favour of a united Libya, run by Libyans and for the good of all Libyans. The issue of migration was also raised by Minister Bartolo.

The bilateral meeting was held in the margins of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, in which EU Foreign Affairs Ministers discussed in particular the geopolitics of new technologies. Minister Bartolo said that the European Union needs to work towards being a more prominent player in the area, and underlined the importance of the EU in becoming a credible and leading actor in shaping the technological world in a way that is truly human-centric. He, however, stated that the EU needs to translate its statements into action if it is to be credible.

Minister Bartolo stated that there is a need, “To strike the right balance between promoting a rights-based approach with the rest of the world and supporting our businesses that will provide the EU’s internal market and its immense talent pool with more leverage. This will ensure that European start-ups and businesses enter and access the market as fast as possible.”
