Towards carbon neutrality – Climate Action Awards launched

The urgency to address the challenge of climate change around the world is growing. We will all be affected by climate impacts both now and in the future. For this reason, the pace of action to mitigate and adapt to climate impacts must be accelerated.

This was emphasised by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia during the launch of the Malta Climate Action Awards.

Titled ‘Climate Action Crusader’, the Malta Climate Action Awards are being launched as part of the #ClimateOn Campaign.

The minister explained that it is crucial for the success of any country’s plan to empower both businesses and the public to take action to address the challenges of climate change. Ambitious actions on climate change by stakeholders are not only beneficial for the climate but also for businesses themselves, as well as the rest of society.

“As a government, we will continue to move towards decarbonisation for the next 30 years and we will continue to ensure the reduction of carbon emissions from key sectors of the economy. The transition to a greener and carbon-neutral economy for Malta will bear fruit in the future and government will continue to invest substantially in the process. However, we need the participation of the whole of society to achieve these ambitious goals before us”, stated Minister Farrugia.

The Malta Climate Action Awards include five categories and thematic areas:

  • “Change Agents” aimed at actions taken by the private sector to reduce emissions or adapt to impacts;
  • “Facilitators” aimed at actions taken by the public sector to help bring about change on the part of the government;
  • “Illuminators” aimed at academics who create new knowledge to inform us about the effects of climate change;
  • “Innovators” aimed at creative people who generate new ways to mitigate and adapt in the best way to climate change;
  • “Engagers” aimed at groups working to raise awareness and educate people about climate change.

There will be five winners (one from each category), while a general winner will also be chosen from the five winners who will be awarded the title of ‘Climate Action Crusader’. Each winner will be awarded a trophy as well as a financial prize.

Applications are open to individuals, educational institutions, public entities, and businesses, which may offer climate solutions in their operations, which may eventually become more regular within the marketplace.
