Obstacle course project in Qrendi for children with autism

Minister for Inclusion and Social Wellbeing Julia Farrugia Portelli inaugurates a new obstacle course racing outdoor training facility for people within the autism spectrum

An obstacle course racing facility project has been launched in Qrendi which will offer free training to children with a wide range of autism.

An agreement between the Ministry for Inclusion and Quality of Life and the Autism Parents Association and with the support of The Club Fitness Center will lead to children with this condition they will be able to attend free training sessions every week and make use of sensory devices for their needs.

This will be possible through a project in Qrendi where a space will be created in which obstacle course racing can be practiced, which project will also benefit the local community and the surrounding area through sports activities.

At a news conference, the Minister for Inclusion and Quality of Life Julia Farrugia Portelli explained how this agreement for which the Ministry is voting the sum of € 20,000 is a demonstration of how valuable it is. the collaboration that exists between Government, voluntary organizations and the private sector for the benefit of people with a wide range of autism and their families. She mentioned how this project will be opening new horizons for improving the quality of life of these children. At the same time, this facility will serve as another recreational place for these people through weekly sessions.

“Through this project we are continuing to put into practice the principle of inclusion, through which we are doing everything possible to make people faced with difficulties such as autism still feel part of society, which are like and equal to any other member. We are continuing to show our determination that no one should be allowed to fall behind, “said Minister Farrugia Portelli.

The project will also offer faculty to aquat residents and seniors to make use of the facility free of charge once a week.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Matthew Vella said that today we continue to see in a tangible way that what we are talking about in the National Strategy for People with Autism will not only remain on paper but will be implemented in practice. Therefore, through sport we will not only be seeing the inclusion of children and adolescents with autism but also provide a space for relaxation for parents and those closest to them in order to truly achieve a better quality of life. .

The owner of ‘The Club Fitness Center’, Julian Briffa, mentioned how after learning of the difficulties in finding children who, with this condition to practice sports and recreational activities, felt that he should give his share to these children and their families have a place to recreate, in addition to socializing with other children like them.

He explained how the project was built on three pillars: the sports one to improve the facilities of the sports community, particularly in what is known as obstacle course Racing; the inclusion pillar by creating an environment that offers security to individuals with the autism condition; and the community pillar with the aim of strengthening the Qrendi community and surrounding areas by promoting physical training sessions for older people.

Alishia Jones, from the Autism Parents Association, thanked Minister Farrugia Portelli for her role in reaching the agreement that will enable this investment to be made while hoping that this initiative will inspire others. for even they open their doors to children who are in the wide range of autism.
