The Blue Arena at the Żabbar Maria Mater Gratiæ Society restored through EU funds with the assistance of SEM

With EU funding from the LEADER programme, and with the assistance of Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta, the Maria Mater Gratiæ Philharmonic Society of Żabbar has restored an open theatre, known as the Blue Arena, within the club itself by purchasing a system that protects the theatre from the elements, as well as lights for the same theatre. By using European funds, the restoration of the 1948 Blue Arena façade ensures that the theatre regains its original design. This façade had weakened over time due to various damage caused by natural elements.

During his, visit Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela could see how European funds were used in the context of the important role of music organisations to foster culture and the learning of music in our communities.

Mr Mauro Xuereb, Executive Secretary of the Society, explained how work in the theatre included the purchase and installation of a shutter system that protects the theatre from natural elements  and ensures that the interior part of the stage is protected as best as possible. In addition, the installation of lights allows full usage of the theatre.

The CEO of Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta, Mandy Falzon, explained how the agency helps organisations in the boost that they need to apply for European funds, which is not always easy for them to do. Ms Falzon also said that the agency introduced a new assistance service in implementing projects with European funds. This need was felt by the entities themselves who were very satisfied with the help they received from SEM officials to successfully apply for the funds.

Minister Carmelo Abela explained that the European Union, through its funds, helps band clubs and socieities to obtain the necessary funds to implment their initiatives. “From 2019 to date, SEM has assisted 25 band clubs including the Għaqda Każini tal-Baned to apply for European funds. The rate of success is huge—from 28 submitted applications between 2019 and 2020 with SEM’s assistance, 23 projects were successful,” explained Minister Abela.

The Minister stated that the importance of band clubs investing in projects for the benefit of their communities is clear. He added that SEM helps voluntary organisations to develop their ideas into competitive projects and also to fill in the necessary applications. Moreover, SEM is now offering organisations during the implementation phase of their projects.
