The Minister for National Heritage, Arts and Local Government José Herrera together with the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi visited the ongoing restoration works at the Museum of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, where a new exhibition center dedicated to Caravaggio will be set up. This will lead to a better display of the various collections found in the Co-Cathedral and better meet the demand of visitors. The project will cost € 6.2 million, and is partly funded by European funds.
In addition to restoration work, an elevator will be installed as well as energy efficient equipment. This new center is also expected to increase public awareness of renowned artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, through a docudrama that will be shown at the center and tell his personal story and achievements. , with special emphasis on the artist’s time in Malta and his artistic production during that period.
Minister José Herrera stated that the wing that will be dedicated to Caravaggio will be an integral part of the expansion project of the Co-Cathedral Museum. He said that the museum’s expansion project is one of the largest heritage investments in our country and will continue to elevate the experience of visitors visiting this precious heritage site.
