United Nations Special Envoy for Libya Jan Kubis visited Malta for talks with Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo.
During these talks, Minister Evarist Bartolo underlined the importance of the Libyans themselves finding a solution to their country’s problems and the importance of foreign countries supporting the Libyans’ efforts. Minister Bartolo said that Malta believes in a united Libyan-led Libya for the benefit of the Libyan people. Special envoy Jan Kubis praised Malta’s initiative with Minister Bartolo’s visit together with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi in Libya. He said this is in the best interest of Libya to meet its challenges arising from the devastation of war, to help the Libyan people both economically and socially.
Both parties also discussed irregular immigration and the need to seriously address it by bringing together African and European countries, and the European Union and the African Union to work together in the best interest of all stakeholders.
Minister Bartolo said that there is a need to create jobs and wealth in the countries where immigrants leave so that instead of seeking a better life in other countries, they can find it in their own country. It was reiterated that there is a need to help Libya guard its borders with Africa.
Minister Evarist Bartolo and Special Envoy Jan Kubis agreed to stay in touch to work together for the peace, stability, and development of Libya for the good of the Libyan people and neighbouring countries.
