“This is also a significant day for our country, as this appointment further strengthens the judiciary, which is one of the foundations of democracy and the guarantee of the rule of law,” President of Malta George Vella said, whilst presiding over the oath of office ceremony of four new judges.
Judges Audrey Demicoli, Christian Falzon Scerri, Ian Spiteri Bailey and Neville Camilleri took the oath of office at San Anton Palace.
In his speech, President George Vella congratulated the new judges for this appointment and explained how the people of Malta will be relying on their wisdom and understanding to continue to uphold the Constitution, the laws of our country, as well as the interests of all.
While stating that he has no doubt that the respective judges will be performing their duties with the utmost sense of responsibility and professionalism, he explained how justice can only be served through impartiality.
The President urged that, in their work, the judges must not allow anything to influence the decisions they are expected to make, as complete independence is expected of them. He concluded by reminding them to keep in mind the people, for whom they are an example of rightness, ethics, and honesty.
Present for the oath of office ceremony were Prime Minister Robert Abela, Minister for Justice Edward Zammit Lewis, State Advocate Chris Soler and Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti.
