Animal protection educational campaign

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Animal Rights Anton Refalo and Commissioner for Animal Welfare Alison Bezzina announced an extensive campaign on keeping both domestic and non-domestic animals kept on farms.

Minister Refalo said that the ministry works hand in hand with the Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare to collaborate with the police and the courts in working jointly to enforce the law with a view to reducing cases of animal abuse and neglect. He spoke about the importance of further education on this sensitive subject so that the people are better informed about their responsibilities when raising an animal and how to keep animals. He concluded that in a modern society there must still be knowledge on a regular basis to make people better understand the importance of respecting animal rights.

Animal Welfare Commissioner Alison Bezzina explained that cases of abuse, cruelty and neglect are usually the result of a lack of knowledge of how to raise animals. That is why the need was felt for this campaign to further educate the Maltese and Gozitan people and also regarding amendments to the law related to animal rights.

The eleven videos in the campaign will explain the roles of the Directorate for Animal Welfare as well as the Directorate for Veterinary Regulation (VRD). These videos will also promote the adoption of animals by the Department of Animal Welfare.
