The government is seeking to make the most out of local plans to create more and better recreational areas and open spaces for everyone.
This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia, who explained that a discussion paper on camping, caravans, picnicking and hiking is being launched in order to guide policy-making and inform the government on public views towards recreational land uses.
“Recreational areas are what makes communities liveable – they provide a better environment and contribute to a better quality of life. The government has embarked to revolutionise planning in our country; creating greener communities that foster a greater sense of public pride and cohesion. Furthermore, we need to regulate certain activities. We need to be more intelligent in our planning according to our local plans and, above all, according to what the people need and expect. We have heard the call for more open spaces. Now, we want to hear more,” the Minister said.
The Minister explained that, through this discussion paper, the government is requesting the public’s feedback on the existing policy framework relating to camping, caravan areas, and picnic areas, as well as public opinion on how these areas can be better managed. The public is requested to review the attached document and send their feedback on outdoors@pa.org.mt until the 30th March 2021.
“The public is also encouraged to highlight what facilities should be included in the areas already designated for these activities in the local plans. We’re also inviting landowners in these zones to let us know if they are interested in rehabilitating their land for recreational purposes. As always, we encourage the public to share innovative ideas, recommendations, views, opinions, suggestions, or proposals to be considered in policymaking. Together, we can revolutionise the concept of planning on our islands,” the Minister said.
