The Qrejten Breakwater project in Marsaxlokk is completed

Ian Borg, Anton Refalo and Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi visit completed works at the Qrejten Breakwater

Ministers Ian Borg and Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi visited the Qrejten site in Marsaxlokk where Infrastructure Malta carried out a € 4 million project co-financed by European funds on a 110-meter breakwater.

Minister Ian Borg said, “This is a government that listens and implements. This project has been long awaited by the fishermen of these areas and we felt the need to take action and carry out this project both for them and for the community of Marsaxlokk. This project will be improving both the access and the use of the port of Marsaxlokk. It will, among other things, reduce the risks of the storm, including damage to fishing vessels kept in the area, and provide more shelter for the port. Our commitment to the maritime infrastructure sector continues and we recall other ongoing investments, even on a larger scale, as in the case of the Grand Harbour Clean Air Project which with an investment of almost € 50 million will reducing pollution caused by cruise liners and ro-ro vessels by 90% ”.

The breakwater is about 110 meters long and six meters wide above the surface of the sea. It was built at a depth of about 3.5 meters below sea level. Many large stones are placed around this structure to break the waves and prevent it from entering the port of Marsaxlokk. The structure is similar to that of the breakwater of the Port of Mgarr, Gozo.

Minister Refalo said that, “As a ministry we listened to the fishermen and gave them great support because we know they have a family to support. We must safeguard every problem that may arise. This threat is now gone. This is another page for our fishermen. This is further proof of how good the government is to people with a clear vision of how big projects like today will succeed. We must continue to invest in our people. We must not forget that the fisheries sector is such an important sector. “

Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that this project was done with an investment of around € 4 million co-financed by European funds that were invested in the field of fisheries. He said that this breakwater will be a facility that will be used by fishermen, in particular the fishermen in the community of Marsaxlokk in order to give them the help they need “. Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi concluded that one of the important goals of European Union funding is to support this sector in order to continue to strengthen and help our fishermen.

Other maritime infrastructure projects that will be introduced in the near future include the reconstruction of Sally Port in Vittoriosa, and the introduction of more new ferry landing site facilities to extend this. an alternative way of traveling to other coastal places in Malta.
