The Censu Moran Health Center project will be the first regional health center in Malta with a total investment of € 42.3 million, of which € 33 million is European funds.
During a visit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne and Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi stated that the purpose of this project is to provide various health services closer to home, to the people in the community.
Work has progressed significantly as the final excavation phase is underway, with 80% complete. This excavation did not affect shelters found at the site as the building designs have been substantially amended to preserve this heritage. The foundations of the building were finalized while an intensive process to enforce the Schreiber wall was almost completed which was necessary to ensure that the building was built as required by hospital building standards. Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne explained how according to the current plans, it is estimated that this center will open its doors to the public in April 2022.
The Deputy Prime Minister explained how this health center will be offering a substantial number of services to around 150,000 people living in the south of Malta. He explained how this project will be exemplary and a model for other centers, as plans are also underway to build such a center in the north of Malta. In addition, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that this will be a good tool to get mental health care out of hospitals and into the community itself.
Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that “through European funds we are continuing to invest in improving health services in our country”.
He stated that the Census Moran Regional Health Center will strengthen the field of primary health and thus provide services close to the people in the community – a project that will benefit the people who live the most. in the south of Malta, where a number of services will be provided to reduce the pressure on Mater Dei Hospital.
The Census Moran Health Center will be in a position to provide a total of 25 services that will be divided into two categories. Services that are already being offered at the health center that are already present in Paola, along with new services that include some that are currently only being provided at Mater Dei Hospital.
The design of the car park for visitors and staff is also being finalized, which will include a space for bicycles, as well as facilities for electric cars.
