London will move into Tier 3, the highest level of Covid-19 restrictions as the capital experiences a surge in new cases with ministers fearing a new strain of Covid-19 could lead to an increase in infections.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the measure as the number of new cases rose by 24,000 last week.
