Malta has recently joined the United Nations Core Group on LGBTI Issues. This grouping is an informal cross regional group of United Nations member states established in 2008, and is currently co-chaired by Argentina and the Netherlands.
Based in New York, the overarching goal of this core group is to work within the United Nations framework on ensuring universal respect for the human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, specifically lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons, with a particular focus on the protection from violence and discrimination.
Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo welcomed this positive development, and held that through its membership in the UN Core Group on LGBTI issues, Malta will contribute further to the multilateral work and international negotiations in this area. The minister added that this development should also serve to have a more humane society that protects the best right that every person has, that is the right to be oneself.
In line with the LGBTIQ Equality Strategy and Action Plan for 2018-2022, in particular Area 9 on the Promotion of LGBTIQ equality on an international level, Malta’s membership in this UN Core Group will further contribute to achieving equality within the international fora.
