The search for the truth, professionalism, restraint, integrity, and humility are among the qualities that should shape the work of journalists – President of Malta

In a speech during the thirtieth edition of the annual ceremony organised by the Istitut tal-Ġurnalisti Maltin (IĠM), during which the Awards for Journalism are given, President of Malta George Vella listed important qualities that should shape journalism, which plays a very important role in democracy.

The President spoke of the need for professionalism, including through the search for the truth, which is fundamental. He also appealed for restraint, which is just as important since the wisdom of an articulate argument is shown when journalists know how to write and speak with a good and appropriate choice of words without exaggerating and seeking sensationalism.

Two other important principles for journalists, cited by the President, are humility and integrity. He also mentioned the importance of the proper and correct use of the Maltese language, and appealed to all journalists to protect the Maltese language through their work.

While thanking the IĠM for its work and for its commitment to further strengthen the professionalism and role of journalists in Malta, the President congratulated the winners and finalists of the awards in all categories.
