Long-serving Malta captain Michael Mifsud closed his record international career on a high as Malta beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in a friendly match at the National Stadium to extend their unbeaten run to five consecutive matches.
The veteran striker, now playing for Sirens FC, capped his final appearance by scoring the opening goal to finish off his career on 42 official international goals in 143 appearances for Malta, two national records that will definitely be hard to beat.
It was fitting the Mifsud opened the scoring putting Malta ahead inside five minutes.
Malta were comfortable on the ball and went two up after twenty minutes when Steve Borg’s powerful header had the beating of Hobi in the Liechtenstein goal.
Michael Mifsud came off after an hour, to end a career that spanned twenty years. If there had been supporters he would have received a standing ovation worthy of his outstanding service to Maltese football.
Malta’s lead increased further with only five minutes remaining when substitute Jean Paul Farrugia slotted home from the penalty spot.
A convincing 3-0 win for Malta ahead of upcoming UEFA Nations League games.
