Group of immigrants relocated to Germany

This morning a group of immigrants were relocated from Malta to Germany following an agreement between the two countries.

This exercise was coordinated by the European Commission as part of an initiative aimed at reducing the burden of immigration on Malta.

The relocation could take place after the necessary preparations were made by the Ministry of Interior, National Security and Law Enforcement and the German Embassy in Malta. The relocation of this group of immigrants is taking place only a few weeks after another group of immigrants left Malta for France. In these cases, immigrants will be able to continue the asylum process in the country in which they have been relocated.

Further relocations of immigrants to other member states of the European Union are planned in the near future. At the same time, the government has continued its work to return immigrants who do not deserve protection in our country to their country of origin. In light of the major challenges posed by the return of irregular immigrants, the government is giving greater priority and more resources to this sector.

As negotiations on the European Union’s New Pact on Immigration and Asylum are currently under way, the Maltese Government reiterates the importance of further strengthening cooperation with transit countries in order to disrupt the business of human traffickers and further reduce arrivals. As part of this work, the Maltese authorities have also achieved important results in recent days when they seized containers full of boats that were allegedly being used for this type of illegal activity.
