Detention service workers and the Agency for the Protection of Asylum Seekers (AWAS) will benefit from the personal injury benefits scheme.
This follows talks between the Ministry of Interior, National Security and Law Enforcement and the General Workers Union.
At a meeting at which the agreement was sealed, Minister Byron Camilleri recalled that this was another government initiative in favor of the workers and to date it has benefited workers who are members of the law enforcement forces, customs and others working in the health sector. This time it is being extended to workers in the immigration sector.
“We want and expect the best service from our workers in every workplace. But, what belongs to the worker we must also use. Everyone knows that in recent weeks there have been challenging moments for these workers. I wanted to take care that if there is a right that they can qualify for, they will take it and this is one of them “, said Minister Camilleri.
The Secretary of the Disciplined Forces Section Theo Vella welcomed this decision. He said how many workers will be able to benefit from a scheme that gives workers more peace of mind. “This decision will improve the conditions of workers whose nature of work is one that requires great sacrifices. Thus, this scheme will be supportive in case an accident occurs during the performance of their duties “, said Mr. Vella.
