EUR 1.5 million to help farmers for storm damage

Minister Anton Refalo announced a scheme of 1.5 million euros to help farmers as much as possible and compensate for the damage to crops that resulted in the loss of income due to the storm that hit the Maltese islands between 23 and 24 February 2019.

The Department of Rural Affairs within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights will be sending applications to those farmers who were affected by the February 2019 storm and who reported the damage following a notice. by the Department. The compensation was calculated on the basis of inspections carried out by department officials and according to a methodology approved by the European Commission. This compensation will be paid in the coming weeks and is different from the compensation already paid related to damages that Maltese farmers and villagers have suffered in their structures.

This aid is being provided as insurance on agricultural products that is not available in the Maltese islands, and therefore the Ministry has worked to provide compensation in the framework of state aid.

About 460 farmers will be benefiting from this scheme with a total budget of 1.5 million euros which have been allocated from the national budget.
