President of Malta George Vella met with trade union and employers’ representatives to share information and exchange views on the second initiative of the ‘Help us Help Others’ campaign, which the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF) launched on the 28th of August. This campaign aims to make up for the large reduction in donation revenue due to the cancellation of its major activities because of the restrictions to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first initiative is the televised fundraising event, ‘Għinuna Ngħinukom’, to be broadcast on all national television channels on Sunday, 20th September 2020. The second initiative, which was the theme of a working lunch held at the Verdala Palace, appeals to employees’ generosity through a voluntary recurring affordable donation from their salary each month.
President George Vella explained that the MCCFF receives many requests for assistance, including medical and social assistance. He referred to how, in particular with regard to medical assistance, the requests did not stop, although regrettably the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic led to a serious reduction in the funds raised. He called on those present to help spread the message as far as possible to encourage employees to voluntarily become part of this solidarity initiative. The President of Malta thanks all those who have helped the MCCFF to be able to continue helping those who have asked for its support, including the Government of Malta, that intervenes when the need arises.
In a presentation if the Employee Contribution Scheme, the Chairperson of the MCCFF’s Administrative Board, Marlene Mizzi, recalled that, to be in a position to assist many people from all walks of life, the foundation needs around €1,200,000 a month, with the highest cost being that related to medical care.
