Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg visited one of the tunnels forming part of the National Flood Relief Project. With a total investment of €54 million co-financed by the European Union, this project is directly helping around 16,700 people and 4,500 properties and indirectly helping around 213,000 people in 12 different localities, and is divided into 5 components.
Minister Ian Borg said, “Flooding is a common problem in several parts of the country. This project was therefore necessary. It is the largest intervention ever carried out in our country to mitigate the issue. Once project works were done, we organised a system for maintenance and upkeep of works carried out. We have 25 people working to maintain this project on various levels, including technical, administrative and clerical and logistical work. We also ensured that workers have the necessary equipment, not only for their work but also for their health and safety. We didn’t stop with this project. The government is committed to continue investing in the quality of life of people, and the issue of flooding is one that negatively affects this. A substantial investment is underway in Mqabba and complements this work, while we often intervene with smaller projects in different localities with culvert systems. We will continue investing in a better standard of living for our country.”
Localities forming part of this project are Birkirkara, Lija, Msida, Balzan, Attard, Iklin, Gżira, Marsascala, Żabbar, Żebbuġ, Qormi and Marsa.
