Trade and tourism in the light of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as ways in which the European Union can be more supportive of reducing economic migration, particularly from Africa, were among the topics of a bilateral meeting held between a delegation from the Ministry of Tourism and Consumer Protection and the Malta Tourism Authority, to the European Committee for Social and Economic Affairs of the European Union.
This advisory committee includes representatives of workers ’and employers’ organizations and representatives of various interest groups. The committee has a role to play in giving these groups a voice and influencing the European Union’s legislative process.
Various points of interest for both sides were discussed during this meeting, with particular emphasis on how tourism can be a catalyst for sustainable development and even boost economic development in Africa, including in the light of of two recent documents issued by this committee.
Digitalisation, culture, training of workers, the impact of mass tourism and the sustainable use of resources, including energy, must be key elements that characterize the development strategy. sustainable tourism. All this is becoming increasingly important in light of how COVID-19 has brought this so important industry to the world economy virtually to naught.
In this context, the role and importance of European funds in the next program were also discussed, to get the tourism industry back on its feet as soon as possible and to be the the main driver in the revival of European economies, including ours.
