In the first six weekends since the start of the free circular transport service to and from Wied iż-Żurrieq, the number of people who have used this pilot project has exceeded 4,000. The project in favor of sustainable transport at the weekend is funded by the Malta Tourism Authority. With an investment of € 162,000, this service operates from Thursday to Sunday from 10 am to midnight with a frequency of every 20 minutes.
In the inauguration of this project, the Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli said that this service will be addressing a major problem, that of parking, which was holding many from going to Zurrieq Valley. “This was confirmed by a public opinion poll commissioned by the Ministry of Tourism which showed that almost 60% of those interviewed claimed to have a parking problem when they go down to Zurrieq Valley. There were 36% who said they would leave as they could not find a place to park. Nearly 50% expressed a desire to use the surrounding water transport service instead of their own vehicle. ”
Two Malta Public Transport buses marked ‘Destination Wied iż-Żurrieq’ and gathering passengers from San Niklaw / Il-Qasam near Siġġiewi and from two main squares, Qrendi and Tar, are being used for this pilot project. -Zurrieq. In San Niklaw, parking spaces have been created for those who want to leave their private car there.
The service operates simultaneously through the two buses with the aim of facilitating the practicability and frequency of this service.
