Felipe Massa has announced that he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season.
The William’s driver can look back on a career in which he has driven for two of the sport’s greatest teams, won 11 grands prix and come within a sniff of the world championship.
He came within moments of winning the Drivers World Championship in 2008 only to be pipped at the last corner by Britain’s Lewis Hamilton.
Massa suffered a life threatening injury during qualifying for the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix but despite everything he has remained one of the sport’s true gentlemen.
