Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Clayton Bartolo, inaugurated the Mercure Hotel in the heart of St. Julian’s.
With an investment of € 13 million, the hotel, which took two years to complete, is part of the Accor Group, which is the largest hospitality company in Europe and the sixth largest in the world. Accor operates in 100 countries, with more than 4,800 hotels and 280,000 employees worldwide.
The Mercure Hotel consists of 113 rooms, a restaurant, a fitness room, a meeting room, a bar and a rooftop swimming pool.
Prime Minister Robert Abela described this investment as another show of confidence in our country. He also thanked the workers working in the hotel and hospitality sector for showing resilience over the past months so that this sector does not stagnate.
Tourism and Consumer Protection Minister Clayton Bartolo said the opening of the hotel was in line with the government’s vision for sustainable and diversified tourism. “Investing in this way gives me courage in these challenging times. It is a project with clear evidence that during this pandemic it has not only not given up but has seen how it turns challenges into opportunities, “continued Minister Clayton Bartolo.
General Manager Kurt Micallef said the hotel rooms range from standard to superior suites with a substantial number of rooms enjoying wonderful views of Spinola Bay. He mentioned that the Group is currently employing a total of 18 employees and the management team plans to increase this number once our country resumes the path of a healthy economic recovery.
