Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg announced that the work carried out by infrastructure Malta on the deep foundation structures for the Għeriexem Belvedere in Rabat is nearing completion.
The Għeriexem Belvedere Project is a €4 million infrastructural investment which will include an improved carriageway alignment incorporating a new belvedere with safer footpaths, benches overlooking the Għeriexem Valley, and embellishment of nearby landscaped areas with new tree plantations.
“Our main aim as a government with a plan is to always improve the people’s quality of life and offer the best possible security measures so that we will not suffer any repetitive accidents which were unfortunately experienced here. We wanted to feel what the Rabat community was feeling, and I would like to express my deepest thanks to all those families in Rabat who gave us permission to visit their homes in order to experience what they were going through. That helped us in commencing our planning for the project with further studies and more precise observations so that this project can be carried out wisely, with the best quality, from us to the Rabat community”, said Minister Ian Borg.
The Għeriexem Belvedere Project was launched four months ago. During its initial process of excavation, in some areas, buried remains of potential archaeological significance were uncovered. The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Infrastructure Malta reached an agreement and modified parts of the project plans to keep these newly discovered remains visible and accessible for future studies.
The project contractors also cleaned the site from decades of illegally dumped waste, to make way for the piling works.
Infrastructure Malta is also forming a walk-through culvert for new high voltage electricity cables which will improve the area’s electricity grid. These electricity cable tunnels will reduce the need to dig up the new road for future repairs or upgrades. The project also includes a new sewer, new stormwater catchments, as well as potable water pipelines and ducts for improved internet and other telecommunication networks.
Infrastructure Malta is working to complete this project as soon as possible, to ensure the safety of road users and the area’s residents.
