Malta offers to mediate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine

Castille, Valletta. Seat of Prime Minister

Malta has officially offered to serve as a mediator in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, proposing to host discussions aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement. This initiative follows recent international developments, including a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg revealed that Malta reached out to US officials after the meeting and offered its services in line with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s call for peace talks. Borg stressed that both President Macron and Meloni have underscored the importance of unity among Western nations and initiating dialogue to end the war.

Borg acknowledged that while both Russia and Ukraine are eager to end the conflict, significant disagreements remain on the terms of a ceasefire. He added that Malta, as a long-standing promoter of peace, is ready to provide a neutral space for these crucial discussions.

Prime Minister Robert Abela further reinforced Malta’s commitment to facilitating peace and diplomacy, ensuring that the country remains at the forefront of global peace efforts.
