Work is currently underway to further strengthen the electricity distribution system in Ta’ Xbiex. In this locality, an additional 2 kilometres of underground cables are being installed to improve connectivity, resilience, and flexibility within the distribution system.
As part of this reinforcement, substations in the area will be upgraded with new switchgear, further reinforcing the system’s reliability. These improvements will help consolidate a stronger resilience framework, ensuring that in the event of a fault, Enemalta customers can be quickly switched to alternative circuits, minimising downtime as much as possible.

During a site visit to the ongoing works, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli stated, “Our goal is to continue modernising the energy network and be prepared for any eventuality while fostering efficiency and sustainability. As Government, we are committed to expanding our energy infrastructure to provide a more reliable, high-quality service for families and businesses. The benefits of this work will not only be felt in the locality where it is being carried out but also in the surrounding areas.”
Enemalta’s Executive Chairman Eng. Ryan Fava, explained in detail how these works will improve the electricity service. He also highlighted that reinforcement works are ongoing in other localities, with 30 kilometres of new underground cables already installed across various areas.
This project, carried out in collaboration with Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta, is part of Enemalta’s commitment to laying 60 kilometres of new underground cables across 21 localities in Malta and Gozo. Currently, works are in progress in 15 different localities, with several projects already nearing completion.
