Economy Minister Silvio Schembri

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri, accompanied by a delegation from Malta Enterprise and INDIS Malta, visited Japan as part of Malta’s preparations for its participation in the OSAKA Expo 2025. This prestigious global event serves as a vital platform to strengthen international relations and elevate Malta’s presence on the world stage.

During his stay in Tokyo, Minister Silvio Schembri met with Vice Minister of the Economy, Trade, and Industry Shinji Takeuchi to discuss the deepening of bilateral and economic ties, particularly in the digital sector. He also engaged in a series of high-level meetings with key Japanese stakeholders, including Keidanren — the Japan Business Federation — Forbes Japan, and the Malta-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, chaired by Yasutoshi Nishimura. The discussions, which were also attended by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hisayuki Fujii, reaffirmed the strong 60-year diplomatic and economic relationship between Malta and Japan, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a common maritime heritage. Minister Silvio Schembri underscored the Maltese Government’s commitment to further strengthening these ties in the coming years.

In Osaka, the minister held discussions with Kankeiran — the Kansai Economic Federation — and visited the Malta Pavilion at the OSAKA 2025 Expo site to review ongoing construction works. He highlighted the Expo’s significance, describing it as more than just an event, but an invaluable opportunity to deepen international relations and position Malta on the global stage.

The delegation also visited various companies to explore avenues for expanding trade beyond tuna exports, which currently dominate Malta-Japan economic activity. Discussions focused on broadening economic collaboration, particularly in the maritime sector, aviation, video game development, blockchain, and financial services. Additionally, the minister met with the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce to explore further economic partnerships.

Strategic meetings were also held with the Japan External Trade Organisation and the Japan Overseas Investment Agency, concentrating on investment opportunities and the enhancement of economic cooperation between the two nations.

This visit underscores Malta’s proactive approach in strengthening its international business network and deepening economic ties with Japan, paving the way for increased trade, investment, and collaboration in the years to come.

Minister Silvio Schembri was accompanied by Malta’s Ambassador to Japan Andre Spiteri; Permanent Secretary Godwin Mifsud; CEO of Malta Enterprise George Gregory; and CEO of INDIS Malta Jean Pierre Attard.
