Regeneration work on the main square of Buġibba has officially begun, with an investment of 10 million euros in one of Malta’s most popular tourist and entertainment destinations.
This project, jointly managed by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Infrastructure Malta (IM), aims to breathe new life into the square and enhance its identity for both locals and visitors.
During a press conference attended by local council members and representatives of the business community, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett explained how the last intervention in this area of Buġibba dates back more than 20 years. “The vision of this government is clear, we are regenerating and improving public spaces in our country, giving them new life and making them more attractive to the Maltese, Gozitans and tourists who visit us.”
The minister recalled how this project is located a few hundred meters away from another project that Infrastructure Malta is carrying out in this locality, that of the new breakwater and ferry landing and which has now reached its final phase. “We are committed to continuing to invest in more projects that raise the quality of life in our country, while supporting the private sector to encourage it to update and improve its product, which will then be offered to tourists and locals alike,” concluded Minister Bonett.
Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul, outlined the phases of this project which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026, where apart from a completely new look for this square, Infrastructure Malta will be improving the services running underground and regenerating the roads leading to this area. He thanked all those who contributed to this project now starting to happen and went on to explain how Infrastructure Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority are working hand in hand to ensure the project is completed on time while the work leaves the least possible impact on those who frequent this area.
This important project is a testament to the government’s dedication to maintaining our country’s status as a leading destination in the Mediterranean. By modernising Buġibba Square, the project aims to create a vibrant and welcoming environment that reflects Malta’s rich cultural heritage and commitment to urban excellence.
