As part of the ongoing commitment to upgrade and improve the electricity distribution system, Enemalta is carrying out its largest-ever investment of this kind in the locality of St Paul’s Bay.

At present, 18 kilometres of new underground cables are being laid with an investment of €7 million, works that will affect around 25,000 customers, both residential and commercial.

“This investment demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting a modern and reliable electricity system. It is another step forward as we continue to address the needs of families and businesses while also looking towards the country’s sustainable development. We are continuing our efforts to strengthen crucial infrastructure, and these projects will further reinforce the energy infrastructure,” said the Minister for Energy, Dr Miriam Dalli, during a site visit alongside Enemalta’s Executive Chairperson, Ing. Ryan Fava.

To strengthen the consultation process, Enemalta also held meetings with the St Paul’s Bay Local Council as well as various hoteliers in the area, where the project’s work schedule and its impact on the community were explained.

This project builds upon the extensive work carried out in 2023 and 2024 in the locality of St Paul’s Bay, which saw the doubling of the capacity of the Buġibba distribution centre, the construction of three new substations, and the installation of several low-voltage feeders. These measures aimed to further bolster the energy infrastructure and provide a more reliable and efficient service to the local community.

Ing. Fava explained that this project drives forward the company’s vision for the modernisation of the energy infrastructure. “Once again, we are taking the initiative to improve the electricity supply for families and businesses in St Paul’s Bay, particularly following the significant works we carried out last year.”

In parallel with this investment, similar works are underway in various other localities. In collaboration with Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta, over the coming weeks and months, more than 60 kilometres of new underground cables will be laid in 21 localities across Malta and Gozo to enhance the capacity and reliability of the electricity supply on a national scale.

This effort is part of a broader vision to better prepare Malta for future challenges in the energy sector.
