Regeneration of Ġnien Simbjożi completed thanks to Urban Greening Scheme

Ġnien Simbjożi, an open space in the centre of Santa Luċija, has been regenerated through collaboration between the Local Council of Santa Luċija and Ambjent Malta. The project included new paving, installations of new benches, lighting, and a fence made from recycled materials. Additionally, new plants and shrubs were planted to enhance the environment and make the area safer and more accessible for the community.

This project is one of the beneficiaries of the Urban Greening scheme. Each project was assessed based on several criteria, including its environmental impact, commitment to the community’s culture and benefits, and implementation timeline.

The project was inaugurated by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli, Santa Luċija Mayor Charmaine St John, and the locality’s councillors.

Sustainable material was used, native trees were planted and a canopy was installed to provide shade from the sun.

Minister Dalli stated that, “The projects we are working may vary in size, but they share a common principle: the creation of open spaces closer to communities and residents. This ensures that everyone has access to a place where they can relax or have a chat with friends with just a short walk away from their home. I urge Local Councils to continue bringing forward different proposals and to be the driving force behind the positive changes we are implementing in our communities.”

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli commended the dedication of the Santa Lucija Local Council to this project and the implementation efforts of Ambjent Malta. She emphasized that these collaborations with local councils are resulting in projects that specifically cater to the needs of each community. “It is satisfying to see that the primary objective of projects like this was to regenerate this garden, making it more attractive and accessible to the residents of Santa Lucia and all those who visit it,” emphasised Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

Ambjent Malta director Josianne Muscat said: “Through these projects, Ambjent Malta has continued to bring the environment closer to the people. In this project, a number of native shrubs were planted, and furniture made from recycled material was also used. An irrigation system was also installed and a maintenance agreement is now also in place to ensure that the garden is well taken care of.”

Santa Lucija Mayor Charmaine St John stated, “Thanks to the funds acquired by the local council in collaboration with Ambjent Malta, Ġnien Simbjożi has been rejuvenated for the enjoyment of the public, particularly the residents of Santa Lucija. In the upcoming days, we will also be installing a CCTV system within the garden to enhance security and deter vandalism. This investment aims to create a better environment and improve the lives of the people of Santa Lucija.”
