In the Marsa Industrial Zone, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the expansion of the Baxter company that manufactures medical equipment.
The expansion, which will be carried out with an investment of €60 million with the help of the Maltese Government through Malta Enterprise and INDIS Malta, will result in 180 new jobs, with an increase in the productive capacity of 20 %. During a news conference, the Prime Minister Robert Abela emphasized that this expansion, the third one of the Baxter company in our country, is a testimony to how resilient our country’s economy is that can withstand international shocks while facilitating growth He interpreted this expansion as one that shows the willingness of a company to continue expanding its operations in a country that has a strong economic climate. So much so that official figures released by the National Statistics Office in the past few hours show that the Maltese economy grew twelve times more than the European average in the first quarter of this year.
“It is thanks to the mentality of a Government open to business, through entities such as Malta Enterprise and INDIS Malta, that our country remains one that offers a competitive and attractive environment for anyone who wants to invest. It is this positive economic climate that creates new prosperity,” stressed the Prime Minister. Dr Abela said that private investment, investment in start-ups and the growth of businesses all translate into more income and therefore consumption in the economy. “It is an investment that translates into an economy that can be felt and enjoyed by the people as a whole. An investment that continues to renew our economy,” stressed the Prime Minister.
He added that this is another investment that is creating quality careers in our own country including for the young people who are studying at the University and MCAST and who will find these opportunities tomorrow. He said that this investment means a message of hope that young people have a bright future in Malta.
Minister for Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said that the investment announced today in Baxter is just one of a series of large investments that have been announced in recent weeks.
“Every week together with the Prime Minister we are announcing large investments in the private sector, with many of them being foreign direct investments, which every week is making us one step closer to the economic goal we would like to achieve this year, that to have the largest increase of foreign direct investment. This investment in new economic niches as well as others in different sectors are proof of a dynamic economy that is bearing the desired fruit,” said Minister Silvio Schembri.
Baxter Malta’s Manufacturing Director Christelle D’Amato said that this investment will lead to the strengthening of the supply of medical devices around the world, now and in the future. “On behalf of Baxter, I would like to thank the Ministry for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, as well as Malta Enterprise and INDIS Malta for their continued support for Baxter’s presence in Malta.”
