The last works are underway in Triq il-Marfa, Mellieħa, or as it is known as Triq tal-Ghadira. This €8 million project involved the rebuilding of the road and regeneration of the shore along the beach.
The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett and the Minister for Tourism and Public Cleanliness Clayton Bartolo visited the project with professionals from Infrastructure Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority gave a look to the works done and explained the last works of the project.
The work, which was spread over a length of three kilometers on the lanes from and to Ħirkewwa, started from near the Armier roundabout to the roundabout of the lower part of the Għadira beach. The works included the installation of water services, Enemalta cables, and the rebuilding of the road. During these works, the Malta Tourism Authority worked on the rebuilding of the shore, from the roundabout where the Għadira beach starts to the Armier car park.
The project included a reorganization of the road with the introduction of parking lots on the beach side where there is a lot of activity, thus reducing the amount of people needing to cross the lanes on foot. . The entire project includes the introduction of a pedestrian infrastructure throughout the entire project, more security for this area frequented by hundreds of thousands of people every year.
Minister Bonett noted how during the last months, now that the project has reached its final phase, hundreds of people are visiting this area every day to walk along the promenade, even in the winter months as with this investment the Għadira area has the potential to be a destination that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
“This project will join the ongoing works on the Ħirkewwa road to improve connectivity to the Gozo ferry. This testifies to the investment that the Government is making in its tourist product, and therefore we will continue to work so that the infrastructure complements the record numbers of tourism that our country is having,” said Minister Bonett..
Minister Clayton Bartolo pointed out how this project goes hand in hand with the Government’s intention to make the next leap by having a higher quality product on every level especially the touristic one. “This project will change the shore of the Lake to one that is more accessible both for Maltese and Gozitan families but also for tourists who visit this area throughout the year,” said Minister Bartolo.
The technicians explained that the works are now focused on the part near the roundabout which overlooks the Lake. At the moment, the last water services are being passed, work is done on the promenade, the last layer of asphalt is given and beautification work. So now the works are focused on the last part of the promenade in the part next to the roundabout of the end of the Mellieħa bypass.
