Between Wednesday and Friday, the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg hosted the annual Maltese Ambassadors and Honorary Consuls meeting in Malta. The meeting served as a platform to acknowledge the pivotal role of Ambassadors and Honorary Consuls and to outline Malta’s achievements whilst also discussing oncoming prospective commitments on the global stage.
Minister Ian Borg expressed his sincere appreciation for the dedication of both the Ambassadors and the Honorary Consuls, emphasising their crucial roles in maintaining the best diplomatic relations, promoting commercial and cultural ties, and providing consular services worldwide, respectively.
Malta’s proactive engagement in international affairs was highlighted, particularly this year’s OSCE Chairpersonship and Malta’s non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.
Minister Borg announced Malta’s forthcoming application to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), emphasising the potential benefits for shaping international policy and promoting innovation-driven opportunities.
Reflecting on Malta’s 20th anniversary in the European Union, Minister Borg expressed optimism about expanding horizons within the EU sphere and commemorating this milestone through various events.
Regarding the global economic landscape, Minister Borg highlighted Malta’s resilience and strategic focus on attracting foreign direct investment in advanced sectors.
In conclusion, Minister Ian Borg reiterated Malta’s dedication to fostering dialogue and collaboration on Mediterranean issues, emphasising the importance of security, stability, resiliency, and prosperity in the region and beyond, all key priorities underpinning Malta’s OSCE Chairpersonship.

During this meeting Ambassador of Malta to Ukraine John Debono was awarded the Ambassador of the Year while Ms Sephora Gauci was awarded the Diplomat of the Year.
