A scheme has been launched to facilitate the devolution of land to Local Councils

The Minister for Lands and Implementation of the Electoral Program Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi together with the Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli launched a new scheme from the Lands Authority through which all Local Councils in Malta and Gozo will be benefiting from low rental rates for land or public property. In fact, whatever the land or property rented from the Lands Authority, the maximum rent that can be paid will only be €500.

The scheme was launched during a news conference held at Gnien il-Gibjun in Żurrieq, which is one of the sites that will benefit from this scheme.

Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi recognized that the operation of Local Councils brings with it different challenges according to the size and nature of the locality. “The scheme we are launching today, while it will offer peace of mind to the Local Councils is a clear demonstration of the Government’s commitment to support the Local Councils in carrying out their work in our communities ”, Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi repeated.

The Minister concluded by saying that through this scheme, the Government is investing directly in the people because the Local Councils will be able to offer more services to their communities by spending less on rents. In fact, a number of local Councils will save thousands of euros with this scheme.

Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli said that the local councils have various functions in their responsibility that require various resources in order to carry them out.

She explained how through this scheme the local councils will have more funds that they can use for the needs of their localities and residents, in a better and more effective way. “More funds in the hands of the local councils means more investment in favor of improving the quality of life of the residents” concluded the Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli.

Present for the launch of this scheme was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Lands and the Implementation of the Electoral Program Carlos Tabone, the CEO of the Lands Authority Robert Vella and the Mayor of -Zurrieq Rita Grima.
