Dr. Alexander Attard MB, Ch.B. (Homs, Leads), FRCS Ed, Ch.M (Leeds) is being appointed as the new Commissioner for Older People. He will start occupying this position from today, the 7th of December 2023.
Dr. Alexander Attard studied medicine at the University of Malta and the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. He started working as a surgeon at the University of Malta and the San Luqa Hospital in 1993. In this hospital he founded the National Kidney Transplantation Center (Renal Transplantation and & Dialysis Access Services). This national service became autonomous. In the field of surgery he introduced these innovative procedures in Malta; Live Donor Renal Transplantation, Carotid Endarterectomy, Distal Limb Calvage Procedure and Laparoscopic Endocrine Surgical Procedure . In addition, he was the author of a study on pain, which is cited as one of the hundred most important and influential articles in the world of surgery.
After a long career in the acute care of hundreds of patients, most of them elderly, Dr Attard retired from public service earlier this year and is committed to assuming the sensitive role of Commissioner for the elderly.
Minister Jo Etienne Abela wished Dr. Attard for this new position, while he thanked Professor Godfrey Laferla for his valuable work in the performance of his duties in this position.
