The tourism sector is a crucial pillar of Malta’s economy, albeit less so for the Republic of Korea. Therefore, during the official visit of Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg to Seoul, Republic of Korea, a cooperation agreement was signed with Minister for Culture, Sports, and Tourism Yu Inchon to establish a framework for better collaboration in this vital sector.
Through this agreement, an ecosystem will be created to facilitate tourism cooperation, leading to increased tourist exchanges. It was also announced that this agreement would foster more significant data and promotional exchanges and promote the participation of both countries in important events. Furthermore, it will facilitate and encourage individuals who focus on tourism promotions to visit each other’s respective countries and promote what their states have to offer.
Minister Ian Borg emphasised the importance of Malta looking beyond traditional European markets and continuing to expand its potential by opening up to markets that are further afield and seeking new opportunities. Dr Borg mentioned that the number of visitors from the Republic of Korea is already promising, and he believes that this agreement will lead to further improvement. He also stated that Korean tourists are of high quality, and as a country, Malta must continue to invest to ensure that this economic sector continues to grow and yield results.
Minister Borg also held a meeting with Minister of Justice and the Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Korea, Han Dong Hoon, who recently visited Malta. Another significant meeting took place with Minister for Oceans Cho Seung Hwan, who was accompanied by a number of representatives from shipping companies. During this meeting, the challenges and opportunities in a sector that is vital for both countries were discussed, as well as potential cooperation.
