Measures for the national cycling strategy
Thirty-one measures will serve as the basis of the national cycling strategy for the coming years and have been published for public consultation.
The cycling strategy, which will be finalised in January 2024, will achieve the following key policy objectives:
- a measurable modal shift from private vehicles to bicycles;
- an improvement in air quality;
- a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions;
- a healthier lifestyle;
- a more liveable urban environment.
The measures presented cover a wide range of initiatives and are grouped into three main categories: infrastructure and bicycles, rules and safety, and information and awareness.
The document can be accessed at https://bitly.ws/XNuJ. Feedback on the document and the measures contained within is welcome via a questionnaire. Alternatively, respondents may provide their feedback via email at consultations.mtip@gov.mt or via postal mail addressed to the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Capital Projects, Casa Leoni, St. Joseph High Street, Santa Venera. Feedback will be accepted by Thursday, November 23, at noon.
Ban on rental e-kick scooters
On March 1, next year, a ban on renting e-kick scooters will take effect, while the use of privately owned e-kick scooters will remain permissible under the existing law. The government intends to introduce incentives to encourage individuals interested in using this mode of transportation to own their e-kick scooters.
This initiative aims to promote responsible e-kick scooter usage and reduce inconvenience for communities and people. Despite increased enforcement and fines, communities have continued to endure the disturbances caused by rented e-kick scooters. These enforcement resources will also be redirected towards other efforts aimed at enhancing road safety.
Once again, measures are being taken to prioritise order and public safety.
